Seattle & Vancouver cruises · Two gateways, one thoughtful plan
Cruises from Seattle
& Vancouver.Choose your gateway.
Plan your Alaska.
Cruises from Seattle and Vancouver offer two distinct ways to begin an Alaska vacation. Compare the actual itinerary, ship and complete travel plan—not just the flight price or the city name.
Seattle is in Washington, United States. Vancouver is in British Columbia, Canada. Each has its own airport, terminal arrangements, arrival considerations and document requirements.

Start with the whole journey
Seattle or Vancouver?
Choose what fits the trip.
Neither city automatically produces the better Alaska vacation. The route you want and the logistics you can comfortably manage should lead the comparison.
| Planning question | Seattle | Vancouver, British Columbia |
|---|---|---|
| Airport | SEA, with a separate ground journey to the assigned pier. | YVR, with a separate ground journey to Canada Place. |
| Cruise terminal | Pier 66 or Pier 91, according to the actual sailing. | Canada Place in downtown Vancouver; follow your sailing’s instructions. |
| Typical itinerary conversation | Often round-trip Alaska cruises, plus selected programs with different endpoints. | Round-trip Alaska options and one-way voyages connecting with Alaska gateways, plus selected other routes. |
| Flights for U.S. travelers | A U.S. arrival airport; cruise itinerary documents still matter. | International travel to Canada; check entry requirements for your nationality. |
| Extra city time | Downtown attractions or another Seattle-area stay, with terminal access planned. | Downtown sightseeing or other Vancouver-area time, with airport and port travel planned. |
| Best comparison | Cruise + flights + hotel + transfers + return journey. | Cruise + flights + hotel + transfers + return journey. |

The route comes first
Choose your Alaska itinerary
before choosing the airport.
Two departures with a similar number of nights may visit different ports and glacier areas. “Inside Passage” alone does not guarantee identical routing or calm conditions.
Round-trip options
Compare Seattle and Vancouver round trips by their exact map, named scenic cruising stop, port hours and sea days. Returning to the same city can simplify some travel arrangements, but the actual flight plan still matters.
One-way & different endpoints
Vancouver is an important gateway for one-way Alaska sailings to or from places such as Seward or Whittier. Selected programs also link different coastal cities. Confirm both endpoints, airport access and any land extension before booking.
Seattle departure planning
One airport.
Two different cruise piers.
SEA serves the Seattle area, but reaching the airport is not the same as reaching your cruise terminal. Use your sailing documents to identify the correct pier.
Pier 66 · Bell Street
Pier 66 is on Seattle’s downtown waterfront. A nearby hotel can be convenient, but check the actual walking route, hills, crossings and whether you can manage your bags.
A downtown address does not guarantee an easy walk to the terminal. A taxi, ride service or arranged transfer may be a better fit.
Pier 91 · Smith Cove
Pier 91 is a separate terminal location. Plan a direct transfer from the airport or hotel rather than assuming a downtown waterfront hotel is beside the ship.
Confirm the assigned terminal even if you previously sailed with the same line; ship assignments and operating arrangements need current instructions.

Seattle hotels & arrival
Pick a hotel for
your arrival and your pier.
Arriving the day before gives air travelers more room for flight disruptions and a calmer embarkation morning. It is a strong recommendation, not a blanket cruise-line requirement.
Airport-area stay
Consider this when an easy first night matters most. Confirm airport shuttle hours and arrange the separate trip to the cruise terminal the next morning.
Downtown stay
This can work well when you want dinner or sightseeing before the cruise. Compare access to your assigned pier rather than choosing solely by distance to a downtown attraction.
A wider Seattle visit
If you add sightseeing beyond the core, review transport, luggage and the move to the port. Extra time should feel like part of the vacation rather than another rushed transfer.
Vancouver departure planning
YVR to Canada Place.
Plan the airport and final leg.
Vancouver in this guide means Vancouver, British Columbia—not Vancouver, Washington. Canada Place is the downtown cruise departure point; follow your sailing’s current terminal and arrival instructions.
Canada Line to downtown
The Canada Line connects YVR with downtown Vancouver, including Waterfront Station. You still need to reach Canada Place from the station with your luggage.
Compare the walking route, bags and mobility needs. Transit fares and airport surcharges can change, so check the current transport provider rather than an old quoted amount.
Taxi or arranged transfer
A direct ride can be useful with luggage, a larger party or specific access needs. Confirm the vehicle, passenger count, bags and meeting point.
If a hotel is included in the journey, coordinate the airport-to-hotel and hotel-to-port trips separately. Do not assume an airport shuttle includes Canada Place.

Vancouver hotels & arrival
Make the city part
of a comfortable beginning.
A pre-cruise night is useful for arrival margin. Extra time can also let you enjoy Vancouver before you begin the coastal voyage.
Downtown stay
Compare Canada Place access, hotel check-in and the actual route with bags. A short distance on a map may still call for a vehicle depending on your party.
Airport-area stay
This can suit a late landing or an overnight focused on rest. Plan the next day’s trip into downtown and the cruise terminal; the airport and port are separate locations.
Add a day or two
Consider time for the waterfront, neighborhoods or other outings that interest you. Keep luggage storage, transport and the embarkation appointment in the plan rather than fitting everything into boarding morning.

If you combine the cities
A cross-border transfer
is a separate travel day to plan.
Using one city’s airport for the other city’s cruise can be workable, but it is a deliberate itinerary choice. Avoid treating it as a quick local airport swap.
Confirm the right Vancouver.
Amtrak Cascades connects Seattle with Vancouver, British Columbia. Vancouver’s rail arrival point is Pacific Central Station, not the Canada Place cruise terminal. Confirm schedules, border documents and the separate local transfer.
Read the operating details.
Confirm route, pickup, luggage, border processing and whether the vehicle or rental agreement permits the crossing. One-way and cross-border rental arrangements cannot be assumed.
Do not build a fragile connection.
Transport schedules, border processing and traffic can vary. I recommend completing the cross-border journey before embarkation day where practical, with room for a missed service or changed plan.

Documents & entry
Check your nationality,
route and travel mode.
A passport book is the most useful starting point for a trip involving Canada and international flight possibilities. Actual entry requirements vary by citizenship and the way you enter.
U.S. citizens traveling with a valid U.S. passport are exempt from Canada’s eTA requirement. Other nationalities may require an eTA, visa or other documents, and eligibility differs by transport mode. Check the official instructions for each traveler.

Embarkation morning
From the terminal
to your first afternoon onboard.
Finish the cruise line’s online check-in before travel, and follow the arrival window and boarding instructions for your sailing. The sequence and number of checkpoints can differ between terminals.
-
Arrive at the correct terminal.
Keep passports, required entry documents, boarding information and essential medication in your carry-on. Follow the signs and staff directions for your sailing. Being early does not necessarily mean being allowed to board early.
-
Handle luggage and the terminal checks.
If using the designated checked-bag service, attach the cruise line’s luggage tags and keep essentials with you. Follow the queues for security, document checks and any required border processing; different terminals may arrange these steps differently.
-
Complete check-in and wait for boarding.
Staff verify your information and explain the boarding process. There may be a waiting area and group announcements before you can reach the ship. Your arrival appointment is not a guarantee of immediate boarding or cabin access.
-
Complete the required safety tasks.
Once onboard, complete the muster briefing, video, station visit or other safety steps your ship requires. Then explore, have lunch, review reservations and enjoy sail-away if it fits the day. Cabin access and checked-bag delivery can come later.
Compare the actual programs
More than one cruise line.
More than one onboard style.
The combined Seattle and Vancouver market includes the nine lines in our cruise comparison. Homeports and sailings vary by season, so this is a fit conversation rather than a permanent terminal assignment chart.
Royal Caribbean, Carnival & NCL
Compare family facilities, entertainment, dining and the specific ship. Verify the departure city and pier on your actual sailing.
Princess, Holland America & Celebrity
Start here when the itinerary, dining and spaces to unwind matter. If a land extension is important, compare its day-by-day program and connections.
Disney, Virgin Voyages & MSC
Disney’s Alaska program is associated with Vancouver departures. Virgin’s Alaska offering adds an adults-only option for ages 18 and older, while MSC offers Seattle Alaska sailings. Confirm the year, route and ship.
Virgin Voyages and MSC belong in current Alaska comparisons. Seattle/Vancouver departure options and ship deployment must still be checked for your dates.

Compare the full price
The better value
includes the land arrangements.
A fare from one city might look lower while the flights, hotel or transfer make the complete trip more expensive. Compare with the same cabin needs and realistic inclusions.
Travel budget
Include flights, baggage, airport and terminal transfers, arrival lodging and any cross-border segment. For one-way cruises, price both endpoints and the Alaska airport connection.
Vacation budget
Add the excursions and onboard purchases you expect, plus service charges or gratuities where applicable. A promotion or advisor offer can change the value; check what usable credit and packages actually cover.
Returning home
Finish the trip
with a realistic flight plan.
Morning disembarkation is a process, not an instant transfer from ship to airport. Use the sailing’s recommended flight guidance and the actual airport arrangements when choosing your return.
Port Valet may be useful.
Seattle’s Port Valet can offer luggage handling for eligible cruise, airline and same-day flight combinations. Confirm eligibility for your sailing; airline baggage fees can still apply, and the service does not transport you to the airport.
Allow for airport processing.
Plan the Canada Place-to-YVR transfer along with check-in and security. If flying to the United States, review the current U.S. preclearance instructions as well. Do not assume a Seattle flight cutoff also works for Vancouver.

Three ways to picture the trip
Two gateways.
Several good ways to begin.
These are illustrative planning ideas, not live offers, fixed ship assignments or guaranteed port sequences.
A coastal cruise with a city night
Arrive before embarkation, choose a hotel that works for the assigned pier and compare Alaska routes by their named scenic day and port hours. Plan the SEA return with comfortable margin.
City time + Inside Passage priorities
Add a Vancouver arrival stay, choose a practical Canada Place transfer and compare the detailed route rather than the label alone. Check Canadian entry for every traveler.
Vancouver + an Alaska endpoint
Explore a one-way itinerary and an inland extension if they fit your priorities. Coordinate the Alaska gateway, airport transfer, land days and multi-city flights before booking.
Make it your kind of vacation
An idea is a good start.
Let’s make it a workable plan.
Seattle and Vancouver both deserve a full comparison. We can choose the gateway that supports the vacation you actually want.

Before you book
Seattle & Vancouver cruise questions.
Tell me what you’re wondering about. We’ll check the details for your travelers, dates and actual sailing.
Which Vancouver does this guide cover?
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is a separate city and cruise gateway from Seattle, Washington. If booking rail, hotels or transfers, take care not to select Vancouver, Washington.
Which city is better for an Alaska cruise?
Compare the actual route, ship, flights, hotel, transfers and documents. Neither city is automatically better for every traveler, and one-way Alaska plans may create a different comparison than round trips.
Which airport should I book?
SEA is Seattle’s main airport and YVR serves Vancouver, British Columbia. Confirm the actual embarkation and disembarkation cities first. Using the other city’s airport creates a separate cross-border transfer.
How do I know whether my Seattle cruise uses Pier 66 or Pier 91?
Use your cruise line’s current documents and the port’s instructions for the actual sailing. The two terminals are in different locations; an old line-to-pier list is not enough.
Does the Canada Line take me directly into the cruise terminal?
No. It connects YVR with downtown, including Waterfront Station, and you still need the final journey to Canada Place. Consider walking, bags and mobility when comparing it with a direct vehicle.
Can I fly into Seattle for a Vancouver departure?
It can be arranged, but include the cross-border service, documents, time, baggage and final port transfer. I recommend giving that journey its own margin before embarkation instead of relying on a tight same-day connection.
Do U.S. citizens need a Canadian eTA?
U.S. citizens with a valid U.S. passport are exempt from Canada’s eTA requirement. Other travelers have different requirements. Confirm each person’s citizenship, documents and travel mode with the official guidance.
Does a one-way Alaska cruise end at Anchorage airport?
No. Seward and Whittier are distinct gateways and can require substantial ground transportation to Anchorage. Confirm the exact port and arrange the airport or land-tour connection.
Can I use Seattle Port Valet on any cruise?
No. Eligibility depends on the participating line, airline and flight details. Check the current program for your sailing. Airline baggage fees may still apply, and passenger airport transportation is separate.
Should I stay in the city before or after the cruise?
A pre-cruise night is my strong recommendation for air travel because it creates arrival margin. Additional city time before or after can work well if you want sightseeing or a less hurried flight plan.
